Logo Design Research

Logos are an integral part of a company or individuals presentation, thay can often be the first introduction to interested parties. Depending on the focus of the company or individual the logo can reflect these purposes. If a company wants a to present a professional image, a bold and clean logo would be ideal, a childs toy store would have a bright more relaxed logo. Logo designs can be used to say alot about a company or individual, as well as appeal to the target parties.

Logo designs are big business, as every company or individual will want a logo to distinguish themselves from the competition. Therefore its important to select the right logo design and typeface to be both eyecatching, indentifiable and enticing. But equally importantly they have to be modern and upto date. A logo design that has been in use for awhile may become overly familiar, therefore when a new competitor comes around with newer more current logo design, it presents a  more up to date image. Companies will spend lots of money on redesigning their logo, especially with new products or a rebranding of the image. In 1997 the BBC spent $1,800,000 for a redesign of their previous logo, the BBC being a global brand, needed the logo to reflect their brand values as well as still be recognisable as the BBC across the world. With new logos being designed all the time, certain trends in design have become apparent. However similar to fashion, these trends also continue to evolve each year, either through influence from popular culture or through natural progression from previous years styles.

From year to year these trends can be influenced through a number of factors such as popular culture, colour schemes that have come through in popular brands that filter down to other similar products, popular designs or styles can then be taken into other designs to create a new trends. These trends tend to change from year to year.

In an article for the logo lounge Bill Gardner highlighted a number of these trends in logo designs from 2010 (https://www.logolounge.com/article/2010trends#.VrpDMvE3dm6).

  • Cubist-

  • Spores-

  • Ghost-

These are just a few of the trends he noted in that year.

Similarly on the creative market blog (https://creativemarket.com/blog/2013/07/15/2013-logo-design-trends). They highlighted further trends from 2013, noting there was a return to the basic of a design and a more simplistic approach.

Logo designs are extremely important, they’re the first point of contact with the intended market and present image of the product. When design a logo they need to take into acount the representation of the company or individual, the presentation of them whether its bright and creative, or hard and serious, as well as being modern and upto date with the current trends. This is especially important in keeping the image of the company or individual fresh, a last seasons trend in the logo design can reflect badly on the company or individual making them look as if they are out of touch or lacking in new innovative ideas.
